A Quick and Easy Guide to They/Them Pronouns

Before I get to the review, I want to state that if you're not comfortable with gender neutral pronouns, or are going to assail me with obnoxious emails about your insecurities, just leave now and save yourself a whole lot of time and trouble. We have come a long way in terms of gender identities and presentation, and it can be a little confusing, especially if you're not familiar with non-binary identities. Now, I could spend a lot of time explaining the concepts and precepts of gender identity, but 1) that would be outside the scope of this website, and 2) I would do a horrible job of explaining something inherently important to many people. Fortunately, this book does an excellent job of laying the groundwork for the use of gender neutral pronouns, why gender neutral pronouns are important to non-binary folk, and how, even if you use traditional gender signifiers, you can still be an ally and support those who don't. Bongiovani and Jimerson have created an accessible and useful handbook to non-traditional gender pronouns that is timely and necessary in this day and age. One of the most important reasons this book is needed in this day and age is explained in the excerpt above - mis-gendering, even accidentally, is a strange and unsettling experience (I speak from personal experience), and this book seeks to help destigmatize non-binary persons. Bongiovani's trademark snark and sassiness is on full display here, and they use it to wonderful effect in expressing their frustrations and hurt from being mis-gendered for a long time. Jimerson offers a solid platform for cisgendered allies who may be new to the concept of gender neutral pronouns, without them feeling like they're trampling something special. Now, granted, there are going to be folks out there that want to malign this type of book. Regardless of what they want to believe, just know that this is a powerful new tool in the equality toolbox, and should be read widely by everyone. Understanding that people just want to be recognized for who they are is a huge step in reducing conflict and strife in the world, and A Quick and Easy Guide to They/Them is a wonderful step in that direction. It doesn't hurt that the book is also cost effective for the end result. There may be elements that some folks may take objection to, so this is a book that may warrant parental guidance - which isn't a bad idea, especially if it fosters discussion between generations. A Quick and Easy Guide to They/Them will be available 12 June 2018.
